First order of business: trade Pujols. I would've like to trade him after the draft but I realized that he was more desirable before the draft for guys with "too many" keepers. A little summary of the shopping:
Offered him to Sam for Miggy and other guys...he laughed at me.
Offered to Timmy for Hamilton, Haren and someone else...he accepted...I renegged
Offered him to Crupi for Votto, Verlander, Weaver. he said maybe one of those pitchers and and pussed out and talks ceased.
Finally agreed to a deal with Mckenna. We all know it. His draft picks were turned into volquez and Vlad - not so good. Ended up getting Haren for Dunn and a closer. I wanted a pitcher in return for Pujols so that worked out. Timmy, keep your chin up!
Overall I am very happy with my return for Pujols.
Second order of business: Draft a ton of pitchers and spend all of April making cuts and having auditions. Colby Lewis - cut. Volquez - benched (can't cut a guy throwing 95-97 and change-up at 84-85, with great breaking stuff. I wish I could bench him for the first inning of each outing). Shields - you dirty dog. Keep it up. Romero - very nice. Price - underacheiving. Lilly - cut. I don't care if you were a keeper!
Third order of business: Dump Liriano. I wanted to trade him after the draft. I thought he was horrible the last two months last year and frankly I was sick of him. 6BB's and 2K's in a no-hitter. That is the type of thing that I was tired of. He will never be the guy before Tommy John...in my opinion.
Why BJ Upton? That is the question: I had three things in mind when getting him.
1. He was a #2 overall pick behind Bryan Bullington in 2002. Bryan Bullington?
2. He is only 26.
3. he hit .300 in the majors before.
I also heard, "He made a lot of changes this off-season to his approach at the plate." That means nothing. Hit .220 - he better make some changes. Doesn't mean he is good just because he made changes.
Those three points plus a good source of SB's and power. This trade will be interesting to see how it pans out. A walk-off last night! I took the bigger risk and it is helping me so far (just avoiding the balooned ERA), but for how long?
I'm worried about my closer situation. Prado for an interim closer was the best I could do, but with the Magnificent Zobrist who needs Prado? I am happy with League so far.
This is definitely a rebuilding year for me and my trades have been nothing but savvy. When I say "rebuilding" I do not plan or will not concede to last place. I WILL FINISH TOP 6TH. I'm guessing 5th.
